Corrosion protection
Water, depending on its origin and pre-treatment, can be very aggressive:
it attacks metallic materials, causes the formation of rust, pitting
and other destructive forms of corrosion. Such effects must be prevented
at all costs in order to ensure the function or long working life
of expensive equipment.
Heating and cooling systems often are mixed installations consisting
of different materials, such as steel, brass, copper, aluminium
or galvanised surfaces. Such mixed installations are problematic
from a corrosion point of view, because corrosion potentials can
occur between base metals and precious metals.
In such cases, special chemical inhibitors must be used to ensure
that soft metals in particular, such as copper and brass, are protected
against attack by aggressive water, in order reliably to prevent
severe corrosion to other system components.
